About Oliver Mills-Nanyn
Oliver Mills-Nanyn attended Rishworth School and Kings College Murcia, earning a total of 12 GCSEs and 4 A-levels. Starting his working life as an architectural visualiser before moving to a seafaring career in 2022, Oliver has found that the attention to detail required in the former role has been invaluable in the latter.
Deckhand work is varied, and Oliver relishes the unpredictability and busyness of life as part of a yacht crew. During his time aboard the 50-metre Arbema, he undertook a total of 10 weeks of charter, sometimes having only 48 hours to turn the boat around – a challenge that truly tested his mettle and skills. Oliver also regularly completed guest tender runs in the 8-metre Castoldi Jet. He has gained plenty of experience – both through his time on the Arbema and as part of the crew of other yachts – in tender repairs, paint protection, furniture and hull repairs, linework and more.
Oliver has earned a wide range of seafaring qualifications and participated in a variety of relevant training sessions, such as the MCA Approved Engine Course 1, RYA Radio and Simulator Training, the RYA Tender Operator Course and STCW Basic Safety Training. The latter course is the legal minimum requirement for those wishing to undertake commercial work aboard vessels over 24 metres, including cruise ships and superyachts. It comprises modules including personal survival techniques, elementary first aid, fire fighting and fire prevention, personal safety and social responsibility, and proficiency in security awareness. Oliver is currently working towards his OOW 3000GT.
In his spare time, Oliver loves to experience new locations and their cultures. A recent trip to India, during which he took on the challenge of cycling from the north to the south of the country, reignited his passion for adventure. He also loves photography and hopes to one day combine this interest with life at sea.
Oliver enjoys a wide range of water sports, including sailing, windsurfing and kayaking, and time spent living in the south of Spain gave him ample opportunity to participate in these pursuits. He’s also a keen reader, particularly of adventure and philosophy books, and likes to listen to music, citing his favourite bands as Mako Road and Ocean Alley. Oliver has a general interest in cars and keeps up with the latest automotive trends and newly released models – he supports Fernando Alonso and the Aston Martin racing team. Oliver ranks the Seychelles as the best destination he’s visited to date.
